Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that’s what we are – Mickey Hart
Drum birthing is an ancient practice, rooted in indigenous cultures.
The creation of a drum is a deeply personal journey and the drum itself is a lifelong spiritual tool which can be used in individual spiritual practice and within group drumming sessions for connection and to experience oneness.
The process of drum birthing is more than that of physically making an instrument. It is a profound experience that serves as a metaphor for birthing one's authentic self or intentions into the world.
The drum is not simply an instrument of sound; it is a symbol of connection, healing, and the heartbeat of Pachamama. The drum represents life force and when played alone or with others can take you on sublime meditative journeys as well as bringing you safely home to wakeful awareness. It is a symbol of the interconnectedness of all beings and a reminder that there is more to our Earthly existence than the physical experience
.
The process of drum birthing, where participants craft their own spiritual tool, becomes a journey of self-discovery, self-mastery, resilience, and rebirth.
The Process of Drum Birthing
Drum birthing typically involves several steps, each with its own significance.
The hides are sought from an ethical source where the animals are wild and all parts of them are used so so that there is no waste.
The drum making facilitator performs a number of sacred ceremonies with the skins, wood and plants that will be used in the ceremony. These are done on particular energetic days such as portals, solstices or full moons. All materials are treated with reverence and deep gratitude right from their procurement which is why the finished drum is such a sacred instrument.
Prior to the session, participants will be asked to source a crystal and wood for a beater. This helps to cement the relationship between drum and drummer.
Participants start their day by connecting with wood, animal hide crystal and plants, which are treated with utmost respect and reverence.
The act of stretching the hide over the drum frame and securing it can be seen as a metaphor for the challenges of human life—stretching our capabilities, setting our intentions, and being at one with our own rhythm.
Throughout the process, participants are encouraged journey with the drum to discover its intentions after birthing and to infuse it with their own. They are encouraged to recall personal stories and connect with the animal and plant energies throughout.
The birthing journey is a manifestation of one's journey through earthy life. The act of birthing the drum is meditative and allows individuals process emotions, build resilience, and cultivate a sense of inner power.
Drum birthing is more than an crafting activity endeavor. It is a profoundly transformative practice that embodies resilience and personal growth. By crafting a drum, individuals not only create a beautiful and powerful spiritual tool to use for the rest of their life, but also engage in a sacred process of self-discovery, healing, and connection to a greater Universal force.
To Resilient Practice, drum birthing represents a reminder that we all have the capacity to create, heal, and thrive, even and especially in the face of all of life's challenges!
